“Shut that door! I’m not paying to heat the outside.” Does this sound like something your parents used to say when you were running outside to play?

You probably rolled your eyes then. But now, knowing what you know, what your parents worried about rings true.

PlanetX believes the same and can give you a hand in saving energy.

Here are 10 tips and habits for improved home energy and efficiency

1. Proper home insulation

This can save 20% in heating and cooling costs and also helps your home maintain a comfortable temperature. Walls, floors, and attics all need to be properly insulated. This helps you save money and also helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

2. Energy-efficient windows and coverings

Having these can boost your home’s energy efficiency. Installing double-and triple-glazed windows can really impact your energy bills, minimizing heat loss and reducing drafts in the winter. In the hotter months, it’s a good practice to keep shades down or use window films.

3. LED light bulbs

LED light bulbs consume less energy and last longer than conventional incandescent bulbs.

4. Energy-efficient appliances

Appliances with the Energy Star label are a great choice when replacing existing appliances. It’s an independently certified standard (sort of like what we do here at PlanetX, but just for electronic goods) that lets consumers know which appliances will cost them less to use.

5. Solar panels

Solar panels reduce our reliance on fossil fuels by generating clean renewable energy for our homes.

6. Unplugging electronics

Using a power strip with an on/off switch (and turning it off when not in use) or unplugging your electronics is something we probably don’t do enough of. Even while we're not using them, the “phantom energy” our devices consume is no joke when it’s added up.

7. Use a programmable thermostat

Using a programmable thermostat like this one is another great way to lower energy use. It keeps you comfortable by adjusting the temperature in your home based on your schedule. Set it for lower temps when you’re away and more comfortable temps when you’re home.

8. Wash your laundry in cold water

Cold water laundry washing saves a huge amount of energy. Giant water heating tanks don’t have to replenish as often if you use cold water. And most detergents work well in cold water so you won’t have to sacrifice quality for sustainability.

9. Air or sun dry your clothes

Instead of tumble drying, grab some clothes pins like these and head outside. Hanging your clothing out to dry saves energy and makes your clothes last longer.

10. Practicing conscious water usage

This will help you and the planet. Shorter showers, running only full loads in the dishwasher and washing machine, and not leaving the water running while brushing your teeth are three easy ways to conserve water. Googling “eco friendly pressure washing” before just doing it can save you time and money.

Doing seemingly small things can make a huge impact if enough of us do them.

We can all make a dent by shopping for zero-waste, cruelty-free, organic merch and by recycling, upcycling, and reusing products whenever possible. We can make a bigger dent by reducing the amount of energy we use on a daily basis. And with PlanetX, we can go all the way by purchasing only products and services from brands that get it. #teamgreen #planetx #ethicalpurchasing #noguiltshopping
